Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
